As a member-driven organization, USGBC relies on its committees to help develop consensus-based programs to serve the green building industry.
USGBC’s committee structure (PDF) is organized around three strategic committees, representing major program areas: the LEED Steering Committee, the Education Steering Committee and the Chapter Steering Committee. These steering committees ensure there is volunteer involvement in the development of those programs. The Board also has committees to help with the fiduciary and governance responsibilities of the Board.
Each Steering Committee has the ability to create Committees based on specific, recurring needs of the program area. Steering Committees and Committees also may create short term, task-focused working groups. All Committees and Working Groups must adhere to USGBC’s Policies and Procedures for Committees and Working Groups (PDF).

- Board Committees
- Board committees conduct the business of the Council. They are not membership-based committees.
- Education Committees
- Education committees and support education programs and events (i.e., Greenbuild and education review and development).
- LEED Committees
- LEED committees develop and deliver the LEED rating systems, vet the technical aspects of LEED, and assure that all LEED credits are technically supportable.
- Chapter Committees
- Chapter Committees represent the USGBC Chapters across the country by developing and recommending policy and programs.
- Government and Codes Commitees
- The Government Committee recommends policies and programs to the USGBC Board for government, and serves as the clearinghouse between government and USGBC. The Codes Committee addresses the regulatory barriers to high-performance green building and development.
